“I could never wear another uniform… I will forever be a Yankee.” - Jorge Posada
”I was able to live my dream - to play baseball with the best franchise in the world, the New York Yankees.” - Jorge Posada
Earlier today, former New York Yankees Catcher and Designated Hitter, Jorge Posada, formally announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. As a devoted Phillies fan, it’s hard to give recognition to a team that I’ve been taught to hate. With that said, today is a day to appreciate the history of this man who has been with the Yankees throughout their last 5 World Series wins.
Within the last decade or so, he has led all MLB catchers in home runs, RBIs, and hits. The 40 year old from Puerto Rico has played each game of his 17 season career in the classic white and blue pinstripe jersey that is synonymous with the Yankees. Throughout his time in The Bronx he has built up a reputation with his teammates. His presence will undoubtedly be missed as the men he leaves behind begin a new chapter without their comrade.
As for me, I think I’ve gained a little more respect for this Yank. Posada was quoted as saying, “I will forever be a Yankee.” That speaks volumes for me. Posada knew that it wasn’t in the cards for him to be resigned to the Yankees organization, but he couldn’t fathom playing for another team. I’m sure there were many external factors contributing to his decision, but I also believe that had he wanted to, he could have been signed to another organization for next season. Instead, he chose retirement, showing that dedication to his team was more important than the possible success he could have had in future seasons somewhere else.
Happy Retirement Jorge. You were a worthy opponent. I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear from you.

Four World Series rings.
And a symbol of class. Diana Munson, widow of Yankee captain Thurman Munson, thanked Jorge for “bringing me back to baseball.”
Thanks for everything, Jorge.
